I am a life-long Democrat and a proud liberal. But I am ashamed of the Democratic Party today. I am angry and discouraged about the Democrats’ failure to filibuster a judge as right-wing and extremist as Alito.
I am particularly appalled that some Democrats would vote against the nomination but oppose the filibuster, while our erstwhile leaders–that would be you Sen. Obama and Sen. Biden–took to the Sunday talk shows to send out a clear signal that this filibuster madness just had to stop. To act in such a fashion not only demonstrates the flip-flopping for which Democrats have become famous, but reveals that these Democrats are more dedicated to their own re-election prospects than they are to the Constitution. At least the Republican Party, as radical and far-right as it is, works hard to accomplish its goals. The Democrats are largely a set of corrupt and feckless individuals in perpetual search of re-election.
I know that the mantra today is to pin our hopes on 2006, but, in my view, that is wrong-headed. If electing Democrats means electing more conservatives, like Lieberman, Conrad or Nelson, then, to a true liberal, the answer does not lie in the 2006 elections. I fear that the answer for liberals will be much, much further down the road: when we have rebuilt the Democratic Party or built another truly liberal third party, and it becomes legitimate once again to fight for liberal goals.
I have received a few emails today, coincidentally saying the same thing: how fitting that Coretta Scott King should die on the day that Samuel Alito is confirmed to the Supreme Court. Dr. King’s dream today is in grave peril. And many Democrats cooperated with the conduct that brought us to this sorry state. It’s time for liberals to begin the long, arduous process of rebuilding liberal institutions, at the grassroots.
I applaud Senator Kerry and Kennedy. I owe them heart-felt thanks for upholding what little remains of the liberal dream. But what do I owe a party that wants my money and my votes but scorns my ideals? I am still struggling for the answer to that tough question.
