Finally, Friday’s here. Supposed to be heavt t-storms today, and rain all weekend, so I don’t know if I’ll get to get out to the parks or not. If the weather looks good, I may head up to Catocin Mountain Park. It’s about 60 miles from here, but it looks worth the trip. Otherwise, The Road to Guantanamo opens tonight, so maybe I’ll go and see that (though it may be a tough one to watch).
The Senate Commerce Committee is getting ready to vote on net neutrality. Specifically, they need to pass the Snowe/Dorgan amendment. Firedog Lake has more info, and who to call.

The Senate Commerce Committee met yesterday to consider the telecom bill and the Snowe/Dorgin amendment to preserve net neutrality, but postponed any vote until at least Tuesday when they reconvene. If the net neutrality amendment doesn’t make it in committee, the entire bill will have to be defeated/amended in the Senate, which is tough. Supposedly there are people on the fence, so if the senators on the committee get a lot of calls from constituents, it will help.
Then we still have to watch out for the conference committee, where a single bill is worked out between the two houses. The leadership can change the bill entirely there.

Man Arrested For Using Coffee Shop’s Wireless Signal

A 20-year-old man in Vancouver, Wash., was charged with theft of services for allegedly sitting in a coffee shop parking lot and using its wireless Internet service for months, according to a report.
The manager of the Brewed Awakenings coffee shop, Emily Pranger, said she noticed a man would come and sit in the business’s parking lot for at least three months. She said for hours at a time, he would piggyback on the stores wireless service for free.
Sheriff’s deputies told the man to go away at one point but apparently he returned.
The man, identified by KATU-TV as Alexander Eric Smith of Battle Ground, was charged with theft of services.

The rule of thumb is that there about five times that number living on the street someplace. Denver is supposed to have around 12,000 homeless in a population center of around 2 million people. I don’t believe that number includes the communities that are not considered to be in the Metroplex so Boulder , Longmont.. maybe even Aurora are not in that count.
plenty of homeless right here in the suburbs…they just closed down a shelter recently and some have made their homes right outside of the local supermarket. The residents don’t want another shelter built here, ok, but they can’t “get rid” of the unsightly problem. Oh yeah, we have a big gang problem too.

He had made decisions he though best for the U.S. and the world, and it was simply unfortunate that Europeans happened not to agree with him.

The Democrats in Congress are having trouble coming up with a position on the War in Iraq because they are so afraid of Republican charges that they are the “cut and run” party.
It’s a pathetic spectacle, and they should give it up. The way I see it “cut and run” is the slogan the Democrats should adopt as their own for the 2006 election year.
Democrats: the party of cut and run.
But I’m not talking about the war.
The “cut” should be for cutting the defense budget.
It makes no sense for the U.S. to be spending more money than the rest of the world combined on the military. All that taxpayer dough certainly doesn’t do anything to combat terrorism. As the insurgents in Iraq are demonstrating daily, all that heavy equipment and those billion-dollar supersonic aircraft, and those guys bundled up like it’s the North Pole running around with heavy artillery in their hands aren’t doing much about catching guys armed with creaky AK-47s and home-made explosive devices. And they sure aren’t catching Osama bin Laden.
Reikhoff is good when he goes against the neocons. Michael from Hudson Institute is a real villain.

Frankly, I don’t think marching in the streets is going to do much of anything. The powers that be just ignore it.
What’s needed is a general strike. Shut down commerce as completely as possible. That’s the only way these people will notice. Dunno how to go about organizing that, or getting people to actually do it, but singing songs and carrying signs that mostly say “hurray for our side” isn’t gonna get it done.

A lot of the countries in South America are not America friendly and might pay to help one organize and train a group outside of the country. The Colorado economy has always been boom or bust..Most of the time it booms for like three years then busts for like 5 years. First agriculture couldn’t compete because of the short growing season at 4000 feet.. Then the oil industry came , then light manufacturing. there was even a fair sized steel mill at Pueblo. Oil prices made production impossible, the steel industry deunionized, then closed most of the mill and now light manufacturing is moving out. The people left behind so to speak mostly seem to be in retail, medical electronics and the defense industry.( insurance, banks , real estate too). Walmart is the states largest employer with the state itself in second place. The most lucrative ( meaning profitable ) part of the economy is still in Agriculture but with corporate farms along the Platte river east of Denver and the Arkansas east of Pueblo and along he Colorado and Gunnison’s rivers in western Colo. Agriculture employees less than 10% of the states population. When the baby boomers run out of disposable income you might as well turn off the lights.
I always wondered why people lived in the south and south east.. I guess if you grew up there the weather is not a problem but transplants can’t seem to handle it so they use huge amounts of energy to make the climate the same as where they came from.
