Finally Friggin’ Friday Open Thread

I’m so glad it’s Friday. I have to be honest, Christmas isn’t a big deal to me anymore. It hasn’t been in quite a while. Probably since my dad died. Definitely since my mom’s been gone (she insisted that holidays be observed; poor mom, she wanted a Donna Reed world, but was stuck with a bunch of ungrateful heathen kids). But once today is over, I have a five-day weekend coming up, and I need it, bad. Even better, that’s followed by a two-day week, and then a four-day weekend. That’s all I care about right now, so let’s hurry up and get this goddamn week over with already!

This feels like it’s gonna be one of those days. The kind where you really don’t feel like you can get up and face the day, but you know you have to anyway. And it’s only Thursday. Maron and Seder on at 11 ET, I think. Never seems to work for me, but I recon I’ll give it a try, anyway.

Wow, a whole day without having to shovel anything. The big nor’easter was a bit of a bust, but the lake effect that came along with it helped take up the slack. From Sunday until yesterday morning, we got about 20 inches of snow here. That gives us over 52″ for the season so far, putting us solidly in the lead for the vaunted Golden Snowball (over a foot ahead of Rochester). I must be getting old, ‘cuz I have to admit (sadly) that I’m a wee bit sore from all this shoveling. At least I haven’t had a heart attack (yet).

So, whattya think? McCain-Lieberman ’08? Has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it? A real “bipartisan” ticket. Congratulations to Chis Dodd, on forcing Reid to pull the godawful telecom immunity bill, even if it’s just temporary. It was really great of the Democratic “frontrunners” to come help Dodd out (not), wasn’t it? Especially Obama. He talks a great game – lauds himself for speaking out against Iraq at a time when he wasn’t in a position to actually make a difference – but never saw a war appropriations bill he didn’t like, and was downright irritated when his constituents forced him to support a filibuster of Scalito (which he preemptively disavowed even before he bothered voting). Oh well, whattya gonna do? Everybody should slip Dodd a couple of bucks, if you can afford it. At least there’s one person in the Senate with a spine.

You know what’s great about Mondays? Me neither. Better drag my ass out there and shovel the driveway, I guess.

Two years ago today, the final Morning Sedition aired. Coincidentally, it was snowing here that day, too (more than it is now, from this “killer” storm). In fact, my listening was rudely interrupted by someone who thought I ought to be out shoveling so she could get to work. Talk about misplaced priorities. Anyhow, should you care to relive the moment, you can get the show here.

Anyways, on Press the Meat today, Timmy Potatohead devotes the hour to the Massachusetts chameleon, Marvelous Mitt Romney. See where Mitt stands on the issues this week.

At CBS, Grandpa Fred Thompson Fazes the Nation, and then Bush Buddy Bobby Schieffer shows us the opposite end of the spectrum (that is, somebody with some life left in him – and no trophy wife), John Edwards.

Over at Fux News Sunday, Weaselface Wallace provides coverage of the most important story in the whole wide world, as he hosts George Mitchell, on to talk about steroids in baseball. Then it’s Pete “Hokie” Hoekstra and Jane Harman, on to talk torture (what’s worse, watching Bill O’Reilly, or being waterboarded?), plus the usual Fux News hacks and shills. And Fux’s “Power Player of the Week,” Ted Leonsis, owner of the Washington Capitals (no steroids in hockey, eh).

At the Goebbels network, live from Iowa, it’s John Edwards. Also up, Alan Greenspan (you know, I’m not saying Andrea Mitchell is a beauty queen, but, jesus, Andrea, how the hell much Jack Daniels and Valium does it take to get into bed with that fucking guy?), and a roundtable of political mastermind Donna Brazile, Claire and Jay Shipman-Carney, and, of course, George :jerk: Will. And This Weak’s “Voice” is Brad Pitt, who’s trying to build 150 affordable and eco-friendly homes for families who lost it all in Katrina.

On Wolf Blitzer’s Late Emission, the favorite of son of Florida’s Jewish population, Pat Buchanan, the next President of the United States, John Edwards, Edwards’ Secretary of State, Joe Biden, Evan Bayh, and Kit “waterboarding is like swimming” Bond.

Later, on 60 Minutes, A-Rod tells Katie Couric he never used steroids (who cares?), Lesley Stahl reports that “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” is becoming “Please Don’t Tell ‘Cuz We Don’t Wanna Hear it,” and Bob Simon goes to a pristine, barely touched by humans spot in Indonesia. Let’s hope it doesn’t now become a tourist attraction.

Plus, it’s the season finale of Dexter.

Have a good Sunday.

Blizzard Eve Open Thread

Those of us here in the Northeast are getting ready to get dumped on with snow later on tonight. If we get the winds and snow they’re predicting, it’s gonna be a blizzard. So, time to get the gas tank(s) filled up, and buy whatever we need to buy to make it through a couple of days, just in case the streets become impassible. We’ll see. They often make a big deal out of this stuff, only to see a less than impressive storm. So, we’ll see. For me, up to about 15″ is an inconvenience. When you get over that, it becomes kind of a pain in the ass. As long as the Satellite dish stays intact, and the Internet keeps working, I really don’t care what it does. If it’s bad enough come Monday morning, maybe I’ll even get a day off. But I doubt it.

Anyhow, I reckon we’d better get out there and fill up the gas tanks, buy beer and lottery tickets, and look up the HD teevee listings (maybe even rent a couple HD DVDs). Y’all stay safe and warm.

So, I guess now we know why the Bush administration has to resort to locking up suspected terrorists without charges, access to attorneys, or trials. It’s because our justice department is too fucking incompetent to actually convict anybody by following the rules. Yesterday, they went 0 for 7 against the “Liberty City 7” in Miami. One acquittal and six mistrials. Of course, the case that started out with a big dog and pony show from Lawyer of the Year Alberto Gonzalez got more and more comical as the facts came out. The gang’s “mastermind” used to roam the streets in his bathrobe carrying a staff, trying to recruit new followers. They trained by playing paintball in the woods (the only weapons the feds came up with were a knife and a blackjack, fer chrissakes). A very scary bunch indeed.

Let’s all hear it for the ABA’s 2007 Lawyer of the Year. In case you don’t know (or can’t guess), it’s none other than Alberto “VO5” Gonzalez himself. What, you thought it would be some crusading environmental lawyer? Or maybe an attorney representing poor folks, or one working for social justice or to stem corporate greed? Oh, you’re so silly.

It’s kinda like the AMA naming Josef Mengele 1944’s doctor of the year.

Ah, just when you thought the week would never end, it’s halfway over with. Well, that’s better than nothing, I guess. I hope there’s nobody out there suffering from this Midwest ice storm. Pretty nasty looking shit. We got a lot of rain last night, which was supposed to turn to snow. I haven’t looked outside yet to see what we got, but I reckon I ought to take a peak, and see if any shoveling’s in order.
