I was watching this movie called “The Dish” last night. It’s about this little town in Australia (filled with colorful Australian characters) that had a big ass dish antenna that became part of the Apollo 11 mission. They showed the launch of Apollo 11, and everybody around the world was watching. There was this geeky kid who knew what every second of the countdown meant (that’d be me; back in the day, I knew everything there was to know about the space program – especially Apollo). Anyhow, watching that launch again brought tears to my eyes, and a lump to my throat. I don’t know if you guys remember that time, but back then we were the good guys, and everything was possible, and for the first time humans saw the world as a shiny blue and white marble off in the distance. For a very brief time, we – the whole world – were all together. Plus, the music was a hell of a lot better. I miss those days. It’s a shame how far we’ve fallen. I hope we can get back to something like that again, some day.
