Today is the opening day of the NY State Fair, which is a fairly big deal here (though nowhere else, I know). To me, it mostly means the beginning of the end of summer, as the Fair ends on Labor Day. After that, the days seem to start getting shorter much faster (which I’m sure isn’t the case, but it seems that way). Other than that, I love the fall, with the cool days, crisp nights, and clear blue skies offset by the red, yellow and orange leaves on the trees. September also means football, of course. That’s not been a lot of fun in these parts lately, but hope springs eternal, and we haven’t lost any games yet. So, who knows. Maybe things will start looking up.

I read a lot of HD forums for DirecTV, and one thing continues to astound me. People keep clamoring to get Fox News in HD. What are they freakin’ kidding me? I’ll watch just about anything in HD but Fux News? I think Bill O’Reilly’s big fat blotchy fucking head in HD would make my teevee explode. Just when I start to think there’s hope for the morons in this country, they go and lower my expectations all over again.

I’ve learned a lot over the years watching TV cop shows. First, if you ever do anything (even if you don’t), lawyer up right away, or they’ll screw you over. And never believe anything they tell you when they interrogate you; they’re full of shit. Also, prepare to get a beatin’ if you’re in a David Milch precinct. If you’re in a Dick Wolf precinct, they’ll play by the rules, so you’re all set. Most of all, though, all female cops are gorgeous. Especially the detectives.

That’s pretty much it.

Saturday is the best day of the week, ‘cuz I don’t have to work today, and I don’t have to work tomorrow. Now, if only I could manage to sleep in a little bit.

Mountain moving day

This day in history (well, my story).

In 1964, this was the day my family moved from Holden, West Virginia to Richmond, VA. For a while it looked like it was going to be Louisville, KY but something changed. I am now sorry it was not Louisville which seems to me a far better place though I have never been there.

Immediate damage – I had to miss my last ever Little League baseball game. I think this was intentional because I volunteered to be catcher in the previous game (spare you that story) and my mother was pissed that the manager let me do it.

That night I missed my favorite DJ Dick Biondi of WLS in Chicago was doing a dance party/sock hop kind of thing in Logan which was 4 miles away. I listened to his show every night on my Hitachi transistor radio that could suck in flamethrower AM stations from almost half of the country under my pillow.

Long term consequences – Small coal country town kid hits the ‘big’ city full of right wing backward cracker bigots. I never liked Richmond and still don’t. Too bad most of my remaining family still lives there.

I always wondered what would have happened if we had never left WVa. I probably would not be in California and probably a lawyer or a judge or in politics there. I do know if we had moved to Kentucky I would not have been a jockey.

Sorry I have nothing to look at. Seems I lost my video and photo powers. Here’s my grade school.

Hope that gets your day off to a rip-roaring start.

Another one of those “not much to say” kinda mornings. Except I’m glad Farmerkat got out of Georgia before the Russians invaded.

So, I was a big chagrined to find out that John McCain is a fan of Curb Your Enthusiasm, Dexter, and The Wire (and Cindy is a fan of Big Love; I bet there’s an interesting story there). I guess it just goes to show, every asshole has his good points (I’ll leave it up to you decide who’s the asshole – McCain or me).

It’s interesting to be spending all this time alone (as alone as you can be with two dogs playing biteface around you wherever you go; with all the growling, it’s like having Linda Blair from The Exorcist following you around – minus the pea soup). I haven’t had to say more than a few words to anybody since last week (my “roommate” at work has been on vacation, so I’m on my own there, too). Of course, I talk to myself and the dogs a lot. And the cats, too, but they don’t count, since they don’t really understand what I’m saying.

Mostly, I’m just trying to keep the dog out of the cookie jar (aka, litter box).

Oh well, whatever. Time to start getting ready to seek personal fulfillment through my career. Have a good one.
