National Puppy Day

Today is National Puppy Day. Pretty much every day is puppy day at my house, but it’s nice to see the rest of the country celebrate. And if there’s one thing we really need more of these days around here, it’s puppies. So don’t forget to hug your puppy(s) today, and if you don’t have a puppy, go hug somebody else’s (unless you’re famous like Trump, you should probably ask first).

Happy St. Patrick’s Day

Happy SPD to all you saints and all you Patricks out there (never met anybody who was both a saint and a Patrick, but I suppose it’s possible). It’s actually sunny in these parts today – and they say it’ll actually get above freezing (all the way to 35!). I’ll believe it when I see it. Friday and Saint Patrick’s Day…. Just doesn’t seem the same without beer.

Happy Pi Day

As we wait to see if we’ll be buried in snow today (still very much dependent on which way the wind blows), we’re all celebrating Pi Day. I have, I think, 5 Raspberry Pis (that looks too much like raspberry piss, which I think would scare the raspberry shit out of me), none of which are currently doing more than collecting dust. I got the most recent on last Pi day, when it was on sale for $3.14. At one point, I had two acting as media (mostly video) clients and one hooked up to my workshop stereo as a music client. They’ve all been replaced by better (and by better, I of course mean “more expensive”) solutions at this point. One of these days I’ll find a project for them (I saw one where a guy used it with a camera module to remotely pilot a Roomba – if I can do that, much fun will be had chasing the dogs and cat around).

And, Back to Winter We Go

Wednesday was a sad, sad day for my home office/man cave/tap room. I removed the beer taps and beer/CO2 lines from my kegerator so I could use it as a refrigerator (‘cuz, like, one fridge isn’t enough) instead of just an empty storage cabinet/induction burner cooking surface. Although it hadn’t been turned on (let alone used for beer) in over six months, it was still a personally depressing moment for me. But it’s all worth it, because I feel so great now.

Time Marches On, February Marches Off

March 1st – the time when we here in the Great White North kid ourselves into thinking we see a light at the end of the tunnel of winter that isn’t an oncoming snowplow. Of course deep down we know better, which is to say we don’t know anything at all. It’s not unheard of for it to be warm and sunny in March. Or it could (more likely) be cold, snowy and crappy. What the krauts call Scheißwetter (and they know their shitty weather over there). There’s a lot of rain and gray skies on both sides in my heritage – it’s no wonder I feel so at home here in Upstate NY and can’t figure why outsiders seem to think it sucks so bad (Syracuse – come for the lousy weather, stay for the abject poverty and urban decay!).

Everything Stinks

When two out of three dogs came back inside this morning, I didn’t think much about it. For a while. But after patiently waiting for Bud (who we probably should have named “Bart”) to turn up, I decided to step outside and have a look. Sure enough, there he was, patiently waiting – OUTSIDE the gate. It’s been a while (a couple of years, I think) since he made a break for it so I was kind of hoping he’d outgrown that tendency, but once I got him inside I realized what he must have been up to. Mainly, chasing a skunk.

One Down, 207 (At Least) To Go

So, we’ve now completed week one of the Trumpian Era, and there hasn’t been a nuclear war yet, so I guess that’s good. And it looks like we’re gonna get that shiny new fence across our Southern border. To paraphrase Saint Ronald Reagan, “Señor Peña Nieto, put up that wall!” Unfortunately, along with all this good stuff comes some bad, and people have been dropping like flies this week – Butch Trucks, Mary Tyler Moore, and now Mannix himself, Mike “Don’t Call Me Chuck” Connors. So many of the great TV detectives of my youth are dead now – Rockford, Columbo, Paladin (both John Dehner on the radio, and Richard Boone on the teevee – does Paladin count as a detective?), Banacek, Hec Ramsey (speaking of Richard Boone), Amos Burke (Gene Barry in Burke’s Law, remember that one?), Kolchak, McMillan, McCloud…. At least we still have Andy Sipowicz.

This Is the End

OK, maybe “the end” is being a little over-dramatic (though this headline: Trump Is Getting the Nuclear Football is pretty nightmare-inspiring). Either way, it’s finally here. The day we’ve been dreading since at least November (or maybe longer if you saw the handwriting on the bathroom wall pre-election, but were trying not to think about it). Personally, I know I’ve been living in denial for quite some time (a plan I intend to continue to the extent possible for the next 4 – 8 years, if not longer when President Pence gets sworn in). Not that I wanted this to happen any sooner than it already has, but it seems like it would have been more appropriate to hold the inauguration a week ago – on Friday the 13th. I hope this doesn’t turn out to be as bad as it seems like it’s gonna turn out. Sure makes you miss Dubya though, doesn’t it?

In the Schwing

I don’t know about you guys, but for me 2017 has picked up right where 2016 left off – shitty. After a rather cold and snowy start, things warmed up for my first day back at work last Tuesday. Theoretically, that would be nice. But what it actually involved was trudging to (and waiting at) the bus stop in 36 degree pouring rain. To say it was miserable wouldn’t be doing justice to the level of suckitude. Never fear, of course, because then things got really fucking cold and snowy – so it was back to plowing the driveway a couple times a day and freezing nearly to death waiting for the bus.
