I don’t know about you guys, but for me 2017 has picked up right where 2016 left off – shitty. After a rather cold and snowy start, things warmed up for my first day back at work last Tuesday. Theoretically, that would be nice. But what it actually involved was trudging to (and waiting at) the bus stop in 36 degree pouring rain. To say it was miserable wouldn’t be doing justice to the level of suckitude. Never fear, of course, because then things got really fucking cold and snowy – so it was back to plowing the driveway a couple times a day and freezing nearly to death waiting for the bus.

I managed to do something to my wrist last weekend. I don’t know what exactly but it got worse and worse all week until Thursday it was so swollen and painful I couldn’t make it to the end of the day and had to leave work early. On the bright side, I had Friday off already which turned out to be a good thing because it only got worse. In fact it hurt so much I went to the urgent care and anybody that knows me knows I never go to the doctor so that should tell you a little something about how much it hurt.

On behalf of the vast left wing conspiracy, I bid you all Happy Holidays from all of us here on the front lines of the war on Christmas. We’re not exactly exhibiting a festive atmosphere here at my household. The wife and I are both on call today, though hers only last until the end of the work day, and mine extends until tomorrow morning at eight AM, when I’m released from yet another week of unpaid after-hours servitude. My wife’s present to me today was to give me permission to not go with her to the in-laws’s house. Not that I don’t enjoy seeing them, of course, but I could get a call about a database-related emergency at any moment, and then I’d have to leave and spoil all the fun (because the only thing worse than being deprived of my presence is to be graced with my presence, only to have it suddenly taken away).

It’s the shortest day of the year (or at least the day with the least possible amount of daylight). Yes, the winter solstice arrived at 5:44 AM (EST), and tomorrow we’ll be gaining an astonishing 3 seconds of daylight in my neck of the woods. It’s always a thrill to see the days start to get longer again, even if it seems to take forever to get back to an even split between day and night (which won’t happen until the middle of March (just in time for St. Patrick’s Day). And although they call this the first day of winter, we have yet to see the real snow and cold (at least around here, which is kind of a scary thought).

Technically, it’s been a short week for me since I had Mon, Tue, Wed off. That was because one of my stepdaughters was in town and staying with is, so I thought I’d do her the honor of taking a couple days off to hang out. Of course, I’m not exactly a thrill a minute so I doubt she cared much, but I’m always happy to have an excuse to take time off.

I’m working from home this morning, which would normally be a happy time for me. But today, it’s because I’m waiting for the shit pumper to come and pump out my septic tank. And things have gotten rather dire here, as we’re now into zero-output mode. No flushing, no showers, not even any brushing of the teeth. I really hope we’re the first stop on his route today, because I’ve got a little something saved up that’s getting rather desperate to get out.

Happy Thanksgiving everybody. This year, we give special thanks for…um, let me see here…for…. Well, I guess I’m thankful that it’s not January 20th yet. Anad that it’s not snowing. Beyond that, I dunno, ‘cuz come Inauguration Day, we are SOOOOOOOO fucked. I wish I was just being a pessimistic alarmist or something, but I really don’t feel so good about what’s to come in this country. I’d say I hope we can hold on for 4 years, but I’ll be the fucker gets a second term. Just ‘cuz We The People really are that stupid. Not all of us, of course – just a minority that somehow make up the majority of voters in the Shithead States of America. The old chestnut is that you get the government you deserve, and I’m fine with those people getting the government they voted for. I just don’t think it’s fair that I’m getting stuck with the government they deserve.

After getting my chores done yesterday afternoon, I was sat in the front yard in a t-shirt, enjoying the sunny 70 degree weather with the dogs. Somewhere around 4:00, somebody flipped a switch and it got dark, windy, rainy, and increasingly cold. It got cold enough to snow a bit overnight but everything was too warm for more than a sloppy white coating that didn’t even cover the grass all the way (though if I’d cut the grass one last time, it might have). Now, though….

Not only does today appear to be the last day of Fall around here, with the dreaded “Lake Effect Snow” warnings out (supposed to turn to shit sometime after midnight tonight), but it’s another day I dread – the start of shotgun season here in the Southern Tier of NY. So, come sunrise, I expect to hear an untold number of Elmer Fudds out there blasting away. Not only would I just as soon not catch a stray deer slug, I’m afraid for the dogs. It’s been a while since anybody made a break for it over the fence, but I’d hate for today to be the day. I can see some asshole mistaking them for deer, or one of our brave hunters shooting one of them down for chasing a deer (which the hunters enjoy doing because they’re so concerned for the welfare of the deer, of course, and not just because they like to kill things). All of which is legal, and even if it wasn’t, in Trump’s America, pretty much anything goes these days.

So, it’s been almost a week since the unbelievable happened. It’s been a tough few days, that’s for sure, and I’m still feeling a bit, well, kind of hungover. Or at least emotionally drained and empty inside – for many reasons, not the least of which was exhaustion due to the lack of sleep on election night that I finally caught up on over the weekend. Though I went to bed well before any of the returns came in, I woke up at about 1:00 AM (to do what we old guys have to do at least a few times overnight) and took a quick peek at my phone for the news (bad idea – if I hadn’t been on call, I wouldn’t have even had the damn thing with me). Things weren’t quite declared yet, but Florida was called, Trump was up something like 238-205, and it was pretty clear it was all over but the crying (actually, the crying had already begun at Clinton HQ). Sleep, after that, was impossible.
