Jim, I find that the best thing with these kids is to try to let them know that you hear them. I find that alot of the parents are overwhelmed and the social services just throw whats available at them, from clothes to programs to chirstmas presents…and then if they are immigrants you have whatever cultural thing (like Haitians tell their children very little and the kids have no say in anything…they also dont go to school for parent teacher stuff unless the kid is in trouble…this is new immigrants without america and english skills) and you have ot be respectful but also provide someone for the kids to talk to…because, Jesus, Ill be surprised if the little girl who I gave the zen player to and get her music (having to work with appropriate and inappropriate and discuss what she can get on MTV anyway) is not gonna suddenly be pregnant.
she is 5’9″, beautiful and in trouble all the time…she loves hip hop and rap…and acts like she disregards the snitching prohibition and the bitch/ho thing…but just the discussion is worthwhile.
Even one kid feeling like they were heard just once can make a difference…thats why I try to get the santa letters and get exactly what they ask for…so at least santa heard them and didnt just throw them a barbie if its was a bratz they wanted…That makes a difference. But the conversation is the most important.
ben and I sometimes drive around and just talk and talk about everything…and this kid knows nothing about his mother, his father’s name, how old any of them are, why he has the name he has beyond that it was after a baby who died… or when Mom is going to disappear to work for 3 days…
I try to be a constant and let him know that he always can call me…
actually I think I need to get him a cell phone because he keeps getting ditched somewhere and having to walk home alone through the inner city where Haitians have been warring lately and some have been shot…apparently the crips and the bloods both don’t like the Haitians who have flooded in here….its nothing like the real inner city, but every once in a while someone is killed on the street in a driveby and it worries me that any kid is out walking around alone.

I think ultimately it’s irrelevant whether or not Windows Vista becomes the huge success Microsoft are trying to tell people it is. They have already announced that the successor to Vista is expected to launch in 2009. With such a short shelf life, Windows Vista simply looks prettier than its predecessor and fills a sales gap much in the same way Windows ME did before the launch of Windows XP.
They really botched the LUA stuff. I don’t know why they didn’t just implement it the way Linux does, and prompt for the root password for anything that requires root access. It has some nice features that end-users will never notice, but not worth the upgrade at this point (IMHO).
Right, and it really isn’t that big a deal to type in a password every now and then, I think Win end users would have accepted that.

No, it doesn’t have a qwerty keyboard. It actually is pretty good at figuring out what you’re trying to type. Has the Internet and all that. It’s tied into GroupWise, so I get my messages, calendar, and address book pushed out to it. Works a helluva lot better then the goddamn Palm Treo I used to have. I actually have an administrative assistant (not mine exclusively, but still) to do my schedule and take my calls and stuff (not that anybody calls me). That’s pretty weird.
I haven’t seen everything they have yet. I’m working for the Dept of Emergency Medicine. They have a simulation lab, with mannequins that breathe, blink, bleed, and respond to touch and other physical stimuli. Pretty cool. Plus, we’re the only Level One Trauma Center in the region, and the only place with a pediatric emergency room between Rochester and MA, and north of Philly to Canada. Lots of neat shit – and lots of stuff going on. It’s gonna be a real challenge for me, and unfortunately all my references apparently raised their expectations.
