Another Tuesday, and just four Tuesdays away from the big midterm election. I really hope every single stinking one of these close races don’t mysteriously go over to the bad guys this time around. It’s not too soon to start getting ready to hit the streets if they steal this one, too. Either that, or stay curled up in a fetal position over in the corner someplace. Actually, that doesn’t sound like a bad idea. I think I’ll go and give it a try.
Oh, if you haven’t been over to look at Marc’s myspace page, he’s got a new message up there:
I want to thank everyone for coming out to the taping of the Comedy Central Presents in NYC, attending the CanWest Comedy Fest in Vancouver, coming to see me at the San Francisco Punchline and Giggles up in Seattle. I’m re-grouping. I’ll keep you all in the loop if I don’t hang myself with it by accident. I’m busting my ass trying to learn how to do some video stuff on the Mac. I’ll get clips up here and on youtube very soon. There are a lot of clips to go through. I recenty digitized all 37 of my Conan appearances. They will be available soon. You can watch the evolution of style, age, bad haircuts and questionable outfit choices spanning more than a decade.
Apparently those of us who went to see him at the Gotham Comedy Club don’t count. 🙁 Oh well, that’s what we get for ordering food, I guess.

There should be bonus points for red leather pants. If Mike Reno can still wear them, so can you.
Speaking of someone who looks good in leather, the CBS Fascist News with Katie Perky actually had a progressive on last night during their “Free Speech” segment. Katrina vanden Heuvel, whose name I am one day going to be able to spell without cheating and looking on the masthead of the latest issue of The Nation, did an illuminating two minutes on the various war crimes of the Bush/Cheney cabal. Very nicely done.
By the way, Katrina :hubba::hubba::hubba: is the one who looks good in leather, not Katie. Just to clarify.

North Korea Threatens to Fire Nuclear Missile if US Won’t Commit to Talks
North Korea stepped up its threats aimed at Washington, saying it could fire a nuclear nuclear-tipped missile unless the United States acts to resolve its standoff with Pyongyang, the Yonhap news agency reported Tuesday from Beijing.
“We hope the situation will be resolved before an unfortunate incident of us firing a nuclear missile comes,” Yonhap quoted an unidentified North Korean official as saying. “That depends on how the U.S. will act.”
The official said the nuclear test was “an expression of our intention to face the United States across the negotiating table,” reported Yonhap, which didn’t say how or where it contacted the official, or why no name was given.
China’s patience with its longtime ally North Korea appeared to be wearing thin as Beijing warned Pyongyang that its staging of a nuclear test would harm the two countries’ relations.

NYTimes/CBS poll: Bush has 34% approval; 83% think he’s “hiding something or mostly lying” about Iraq
by Joe in DC – 10/09/2006 10:31:00 PM
The NY Times/CBS poll released this evening reaffirms what the other polls are showing. The Republicans are in trouble:
– snip –
Mr. Bush clearly faces constraints as he seeks to address the public concerns about Iraq that have shrouded this midterm election: 83 percent of respondents thought that Mr. Bush was either hiding something or mostly lying when he discussed how the war in Iraq was going.
83 percent. That is an amazing number. Americans do not trust their President on the major issue of the day.
And, Bush thinks the North Korea situation is going to help him.

I agree (I think)
Republican campaign officials said yesterday that they expect to lose at least seven House seats and as many as 30 in the Nov. 7 midterm elections, as a result of sustained violence in Iraq and the page scandal involving former GOP representative Mark Foley.
Democrats need to pick up 15 seats in the election to take back control of the House after more than a decade of GOP leadership. Two weeks of virtually nonstop controversy over President Bush’s war policy and House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert’s handling of the page scandal have forced party leaders to recalculate their vulnerability and placed a growing number of Republican incumbents and open seats at much greater risk.

In the Greek Orthodox Church, October 16th is the Longinos the Centurion:
This Martyr was in the service of Pontius Pilate at the time of Christ our Saviour’s Passion. While standing guard at the Cross and beholding the earthquake and all that came to pass, he cried out with fear, “Truly this was the Son of God” (Matt. 27:54). After the Resurrection, he forsook the military and departed for Cappadocia, his homeland, where he preached Christ. By the agency of Pontius Pilate, Tiberius Caesar had him arrested and beheaded.

I see that “unnamed sources” with US intel agencies are saying that the North Korean blast was a dud (Drudge has been pushing this since yesterday). I don’t buy it, if the USGS intensity estimate was right it was at least 1kt, but probably not more than 5kt – maybe a fissle, but certainly not a dud (my calc was 3.6kt). Anybody think this is an attempt to try to defuse the public perception of the situation and downplay the fact NK went nuclear on W’s watch?

A couple of summers ago NBC ran a “reality show” in which bands were reunited and competed against each other. Loverboy was one of the bands on the first episode, and Mike Reno was indeed rocking the red leather pants. Maybe a size or two larger than back in the day, but what the hell.
If they’re touring, he’s probably wearing them. I’m holding out for the Van Halen reunion myself.

A Culprit in Deer Saliva
A study in Science confirms what scientists have long suspected — that chronic wasting disease is spread in deer through saliva. The disease, which is similar to mad cow disease, is easily transmitable among deer (and elk and moose, too), and the saliva route explains why: grazing an area that has been grazed by another deer may lead to infection.
The study, by researchers from Colorado State University and other institutions, also found prions, the infectious agent, in deer blood

I told the nice polltaker that I don’t think that Bush is hiding anything about Iraq, because I have access to a computer and Juan Cole’s web site, so if he’s trying to hide something, he is not succeeding.
And as for the next question of whether the War in Iraq is part of the War on Terror, I don’t believe that there can be a war on an improper noun, so it stands to reason that the War in Iraq can’t be part of a non-existent entity.
And, no, I don’t believe that the Dems can do a better job on national security than the Repubs, because the whole thing is a delusional paranoid load of horseshit, since we’re only in real danger from home-grown demogogues and whores and their useful idiots in the media and parts of Connecticut. Giant comet may collide with Earth late October
06.10.2006
According to the Russian astronomer Nikolai Fedorovsky, a giant comet flying at top speed is bound for Earth. Should the comet stay on the collision course, it may hit the planet in late October. The impact will cause devastating tsunamis, earthquakes and avalanches, says Fedorovsky. He saw the killer comet in a telescope two weeks ago. He managed to calculate the comet’s trajectory. We got in touch with Nikolai Fedorovsky:
“Just a few people are aware of the fact that comets of various sizes fly past Earth at a very close distance on a regular basis,” says Fedorovsky. “Those comets usually pass by unnoticed. The above circumstance is not a guarantee against disaster by any means. The Tunguska meteorite landed in the wilderness of Siberia. What if the behemoth had plunged into the center of Europe or somewhere in the ocean?
“I’m not trying to scare anybody, I just want to warn the public,” sums up Fedorovsky. “We should pay attention to this suspicious celestial body. We could obtain more accurate calculations if other astronomers join forces. We could also photograph it if we’re in luck. We will probably partake in one of the greatest events in the history of humankind,” adds he.
As for the “Fedorovsky asteroid,” all the above scientists believe the report is either a mistake or exaggeration. “We’ll surely see more reports like that in the future. But we shouldn’t fly into a panic each time we see another doomsday being announced in the press. Let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope that the thing will fail to hit our planet,” says Igor Gerasimov.

Sex has never found a welcoming home in America. From the earliest Puritans to today’s religious zealots, sex has been a constant source of discomfort in terms of both personal physical experience and social relations. This discomfort is, at root, what drives the Foley scandal and the public’s peculiar fascination with it.
Traditionally, those who have challenged conventional notions of acceptable sex have often been greeted with public ridicule and the pillory, the jail cell and psycho ward–if not worse. Yet, since the earliest colonization of North American four centuries ago, the boundaries of acceptable sex have slowly but steadily expanded. Today, masturbation and oral sex are no longer sins; premarital sex, adultery, interracial sex and homosexuality are no longer criminal offenses; oral contraceptives and abortion still a woman’s choice; Viagra and breast augmentation surgery the hottest medical innovations; tattoos, piercings and stud collars fashion statements; movies, television, magazines, online and fashion celebrate a nonstop erotic spectacle; and pornography is a $10 billion business. Only nonconsensual (e.g., pedophilia, incest, rape, bestiality) and commercial sex (outside Nevada) remain beyond the pale
