Well, it’s Tuesday, which means we have to decide whether to watch I Dream of Jeannie or The Mod Squad at 7:30 tonight. Of course, Red Skelton at 8:30 is a no-brainer (though I like Julia, too). I think Dennis is Wonderful. I just don’t know if he is tough enough for now.

Druid, go see Dennis when he comes to town. The man will win you over. He can speechify like nobody’s business. Smart, funny, compassionate and committed.
Not to mention tough. He’s a church-going Catholic on his third wife. As a single atheist, I have tremendous respect for his commitment to his spirituality and his desire to fuck. He flips the bird to the pope every time he does the deed with his shit-hot wife. THAT is tough.
Here’s one for the pope:

Nobel Winner Warns of Dangers of Globalization
by Walter Gibbs
OSLO — The Bangladeshi banker Muhammad Yunus, who invented the practice of making small, unsecured loans to the poor, warned today that the globalized economy was becoming a dangerous “free-for-all highway.”
“Its lanes will be taken over by the giant trucks from powerful economies,” Dr. Yunus said during a lavish ceremony at which he was awarded the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize. “Bangladeshi rickshaws will be thrown off the highway.”
While international companies motivated by profit may be crucial in addressing global poverty, he said, nations must also cultivate grassroots enterprises and the human impulse to do good.
Challenging economic theories that he learned as a Ph.D. student at Vanderbilt University, in Nashville in the 1970s, he said glorification of the entrepreneurial spirit has led to “one-dimensional human beings” motivated only by profit.

Small nuclear conflict could affect globe, report says
By John Johnson Jr., Times Staff Writer
December 12, 2006
SAN FRANCISCO — Even a small nuclear conflict could have catastrophic environmental and societal consequences, extending the death toll far beyond the number of people killed directly by bombs, according to the first comprehensive climatic analysis of a regional nuclear war.
A few dozen modest Hiroshima-sized nuclear weapons exchanged between India and Pakistan, for example, could produce a globe-encircling pall of smoke, causing temperatures to fall worldwide and disrupting food production for millions, according to the analysis presented Monday at a meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco.

Hey, Kevin, could you see the shuttle liftoff from where you’re at the other night?
Comment by pjsauter — December 12, 2006 @ 9:08 am
Good question. We’re not close enough to see it during daytime launches, but there hasn’t been a night launch in so long that I’m not really sure. My impulse is to guess that there’s probably too much urban lighting for it to be visible, but once it gets high enough in the sky we might be able to see it.
I had the TV on at the time and watched the launch, and it didn’t even occur to me to go outside and look. I’ll have to check next time and let everyone know. It sounds like there will be more night launches upcoming, since this one went well.
Maybe they’ll even try PENGUINS IN SPACE!!!
:penguin:
I’ve always wanted to get down there for a launch. Even looked into getting launch viewing tickets. I hear the ground rumbles and it’s pretty nifty – even from as far away as you can actually get. But, since you never know for sure when the damn things will fly, you’d need to take a month off just to be sure you could be there. Of course, you can also go to the ELV launch pads, and then there’s Vandenburg, but, short of them putting another Saturn V up there, the shuttle would be the most impressive.
Morning Seditionists – I need your help.
I put out a podcast every week called Indirect Democracy. With this week marking the one year anniversary of the end of Morning Sedition, I am doing a tribute to MS and giving out the What a Weinie Award to Danny Goldberg. I have a couple of pages of notes on why I hate the man, but I feel it lacks something and would like your help.
Would you, if you like, list the things you most hate about what Danny Goldberg did to Morning Sedition and Air America?
I really appreciate any input.
David

The turtle with its miserly metabolism and tranquil temperament, its capacity to forgo food and drink for months at a time, its redwood burl of a body shield, so well engineered it can withstand the impact of a stampeding wildebeest, the turtle is one of the longest-lived creatures Earth has known. Individual turtles can survive for centuries, bearing silent witness to epic swaths of human swagger. Last March, a giant tortoise named Adwaita said to be as old as 250 years died in a Calcutta zoo, having been taken to India by British sailors, records suggest, during the reign of King George II. In June, newspapers around the world noted the passing of Harriet, a Galapagos tortoise that died in the Australia Zoo at age 176 — 171 years after Charles Darwin is said, perhaps apocryphally, to have plucked her from her equatorial home.

What I hate about Goldberg:
His arrogance rivals The Shrub. Because of his own feelings he cancelled a program that not only was gaining audience but had a loyal following. Like The Shrub he thought that he knew better and that he could turn an audience to his desires. Like The Shrub he would not listen to anyone who disagreed. And, like The Shrub, he destroyed the very thing that he thought would be his vehicle to acclaim.
:yippee:Morning all. I saw Marc last night at the Hudson. It was GREAT! The house was packed and Marc was on fire! It was a full hour show titled “An evening with Marc Maron”. I am sure you will all see it when it airs on Comedy Central. I really think that his star is rising……….:yippee:
From today’s Dailykos:
Regardless of what happens to “The Al Franken Show,” rarely has there been a major event recently for the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, as the Democratic Party is known in Minnesota, without Franken making an appearance.
“He is not acting like someone who is just trying to help,” said Barry Casselman, a Minnesota-based political analyst. “He’s a much sought-after person for fundraisers and he’s been very helpful to DFL candidates. For over a year now, you see him everywhere.”
Franken also launched a political action committee, Midwest Values, in 2005. The PAC distributed more than $240,000 to candidates and other committees as of Oct. 18. That, combined with his trips through the political circuit and stint as an emcee for fundraisers, has helped endear him to the party faithful.
“He’s built up a lot of good will within the party,” said one Minnesota Democratic operative who did not want to be named. “He has positioned himself very well if he is going to run.”
While Franken and other potential candidates continue to deliberate whether to challenge Coleman, Rep. Betty McCollum (D-Minn.) has taken herself out of the running.
McCollum is “100 percent committed to the House and a Democratic majority,” according to her spokesman.
Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak (D) is another oft-mentioned potential Senate candidate. The Democratic operative said Rybak has been “spending more time outside of Minneapolis and must be at least considering a run.”
Other Democrats believed to be mulling bids are: St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman (no relation to the Senator); outgoing state Senate Majority Leader Dean Johnson; state Sen. Becky Lourey; and attorney Mike Ciresi […]
For the immediate future, Franken, who declined to be interviewed for this story, is focusing on his role as a comedian. He embarks on a United Service Organizations tour this week, his seventh since the U.S. invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq.
His tour will take him to Afghanistan and Kuwait as well as to Iraq as he tries to bolster the spirits of U.S. troops during the holiday season.
According to an article in the Washington Post Bush is going to try to stem the violence in Iraq by opening STATE OWNED factories. I don’t know why he isn’t using the method that he used here: giving money to rich folks through tax cuts.

Wolfowitz in firing line as World Bank faces mass exodus
WORLD Bank president Paul Wolfowitz faces mounting criticism from directors of the international lending organisation who say he relies on political advisers with little expertise in development while driving away seasoned managers.
Half of the bank’s 29 highest-level executives have left since Mr Wolfowitz, the former US deputy defence secretary and an architect of President George Bush’s invasion of Iraq, took office in June last year. Among them is Christiaan Poortman, vice-president for the Middle East and a 30-year veteran, who left in September after resisting pressure to speed up lending and adding staff in Iraq.

Columnist claims soy products reduce penis size, make men gay
A column published today on conservative website World Net Daily claims that use of soy products leads to reduced penis size and higher rates of male homosexuality.
In “A devil food is turning out kids into homosexuals,” author James Rutz claims that soy raises human estrogen levels, causing the shifts.
The hormone-link theory regarding homosexuality was abandoned by mainstream scientists in the 1980s, after studies found higher testosterone levels among gay men as often as among heterosexuals.

ICE raids Swift & Co. plants
GREELEY — Special agents from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement executed civil search warrants at six Swift & Co. plants in the midwest and Colorado to break a large identity theft scheme.
Swift is the third-largest beef producer in the U.S., and operations at six plants were suspended today as federal agents investigate the possible hiring of illegal immigrants, ICE officials said.
ICE agents executed the warrants at plants in Nebraska, Texas, Utah, Iowa and Minnesota, in addition to Greeley.

Lethal lead levels found in Congressional gift shop souvenirs
A report released today by Democratic staffers in Congress found that official Capitol Hill gift shops were selling items containing dangerous levels of lead, according to news stories in Roll Call and The Hill.
Staff from the offices of Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA) and Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) jointly published the report yesterday. Out of 13 items tested, 7 contained dangerous levels of lead, with some items amounting to “lethal levels.” The items have been pulled from the four Congressional gift shops where they were for sale.
According to the report from The Hill’s Kelly McCormack, the following items had dangerous levels of lead: bracelets and eagle pendants, a Capitol dome pin, and a Capitol charm and souvenir spoon. In all, 13 items were tested. One $4.95 silver-plated bracelet contained 38 percent lead, which is a potentially lethal dosage.

Business lobbyists flock to Centrist Democrats
By Jim Snyder
One of the earliest signs that life for Democrats would be different in the majority came at a post-election event sponsored by the New Democrat Coalition, the pro-business group of centrist Democrats.
Previous affairs drew at most 20 lobbyists, but the “meet-and-greet” at Nortel’s Washington office two days after Democrats swept to power drew around 60 mostly high-tech lobbyists looking to build a relationship, according to Kevin Lawlor, the spokesman for New Democrat Coalition (NDC) Chairwoman Ellen Tauscher (D-Calif.).
Worried about what the Democratic Congress may mean for their business clients, to say nothing of the new limits on member access Democrats may impose as part of an ethics reform package, lobbyists have tried hard in the weeks following the election to build new links to the new majority

Sufjan Stevens
Songs for Christmas
Listen: “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing”
Prolific singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens has been recording holiday EPs on and off since 2001, but their audience has consisted mostly of friends, family and lucky music-blog patrons. Now, in the wake of Stevens’ 2005 breakthrough with Illinois, his label has released Songs for Christmas, a lavish — and bargain-priced — five-disc box set compiling all five years’ worth of endlessly warm, beautiful holiday tunes. The tone here is consistently kind, with an appropriate mixture of religious fervor (“Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing”) and goofball whimsy (“Come On! Let’s Boogey to the Elf Dance!”). Anyone who loved Low’s sleeper classic Christmas is virtually guaranteed to love Songs for Christmas, and vice versa.
The Klezmatics playing Woody Guthrie sounds like some good fellow traveling fun, too.
Hate the holidays, dig the tunes.
