On behalf of the Eastern Time Zone, I wish you all a Happy New Year. Let’s hope 2007 sees some real – positive – changes in the world.
One positive change here in NY – our long state nightmare is finally over, as Eliot Spitzer is now our Governor. So long, Pataki. Lotsa luck on that presidential run.

Global super-union within a decade, says Amicus chief
Equities strategists believe that the good times in world markets will ontinue – but for how long?
An international trade union, working in at least three countries, could be created within a decade, the leader of one of Britain’s biggest unions has predicted
Amicus, which has 1.1 million members and is soon to merge with the T&G, has forged solidarity agreements with IG Metall in Germany and two American unions, the Machinists and the United Steel Workers. The T&G also has links with the SEIU, the US service industry union.
Derek Simpson, general secretary of Amicus, said: “Our aim is to create a powerful single union that can transcend borders to challenge the global forces of capital. I envisage a functioning, if loosely federal, multinational trade union organisation within the next decade.”

Good Morning.:joe:
Lake Superior State University on Sunday released its annual “List of Words and Phrases Banished from the Queen’s English for Mis-Use, Over-Use and General Uselessness.”
Take “ask your doctor,” the mantra of pharmaceutical commercials. The university called it “the chewable vitamin morphine of marketing.”
Critics piled on the media’s practice of combined celebrity names such as “TomKat” or “Brangelina.” One said, “It’s so annoying, idiotic and so lame and pathetic that it’s “lamethetic.'”
Real estate listings were targeted for overuse of “boast.” As in “master bedroom boasts his-and-her fireplaces — never ‘bathroom apologizes for cracked linoleum,'” quipped Morris Conklin of Portugal.
It wasn’t hard to find the phrase “gone/went missing” in 2006. “It makes ‘missing’ sound like a place you can visit, such as the Poconos. Is the person missing, or not?” asked Robin Dennis of Texas.
The university’s word watchers had no use for “truthiness,” the word popularized by Comedy Central satirist Stephen Colbert. It was selected as the word that best summed up 2006 in an online survey by dictionary publisher Merriam-Webster.
The list, which in recent years has included such gems as “show me the money, “erectile dysfunction” and “holiday tree,” is closing in on its 1,000th banishment. And despite the university’s vigilance, university spokesman Tom Pink said he’s not aware that any dictionaries have followed its advice.
“Sometimes people write us and tell us, ‘This isn’t working,'” Pink said. “I tell them we need an enforcement division.”

Happy New Year 2007, y’all!

Not feeling the surge.
Sorry
Good morning guys….happy…whatever and all.
Fred, Mom thinks that the republicans have really screwed up so far into it that its gonna be hard for them to do anything….she is more positive than I am about things but maybe having lived through more you have a more balanced view of things…though all the older folks I talk to say that they have never seen anything like this…
PJ -mom Loves spitzer….she is all full of information today….I can hardly wake up….
Krista….I am so happy about this edwards things…his website and tools are so great….Ive put the link up on my site and signed up to be a precint blogger and volunteer…and the Dean/Lamont folks are all signed up already for my area….and I also reserved a room at the Yearly Kos, which anyone who is interested in the blogosphere should do just for the hell of it…you dont have to pay unless you go and can cancel up till a day in advance…
Yeah, I think Edwards is the right guy. Him and Obama. Thanks for reminding me, i was gonna put a link up on my blog too.
I dont know about Obama…he has great vision but has not enough experience. I think that Edwards and Gore owuld be excellent…and/or Edwards might need someone who has more military experience ….the terra-ism thing is gonna come up again and I dont know if Edwards has that air of security thing about him…
Id like to see Gore/Edwards with Obama having a really top position in the cabinet….anything but Hillary…
I wonder if Nick is up yet
I really don’t think Gore is gonna run. I really don’t. He really seems like he is content with what he is doing.
I love Mimosas in the morning (afternoon to some and Eve to how I was SNIFF). A “natural” speedball (a joke:rofl2: = t::joe: in tankard and Mimosa sparking in crystal …
No matter how poor I always served on crystal, so NO ONE felt poor only Sparkling, even if one was a poor student .:!:
AIV
Yeah, well, Gore is probably better off doing what he is doing. he is able to do more than he ever could as president….I just think that the ticket of Obama and edwards screams Not Enough Experience!….
cheers Dru!!:dancers:
another year…..here we go!
Melina I agree … whatever Dem gets the nod – HOPEFULLY Gore and, I would not mind, Edwards.
Gore will run … I swear! The race is on.
Hilary disappointed me already, and I was at first pro her.
… and Edwards annouced Saturday and Sunday I believe.
AIV
I still think that the govt would be better run my a counsel of we in the Maron Party — :banana:forever:banana: Cheers :alc:
AIV
No! Edwards/Obama says FRESH to me! :hubba::cool::wink:
Also, I think Edwards looks like John Ritter a little!
Well, from what Im seeing round here as far as who is blogging on Edward’s site and who has signed up, the Jim Dean machine is behind Edwards…and they were heavily behind Lamont….with THE Dean having to stand back till the party decides its good to have the brother around…..but it is early for them to jump on board anything….they are a real internet force and did everything for Lamont including being the treasurers of the campaign and hosting know the candidate nights up ther street here….They also run the meetups….I dont much like the whole power structure of it already in place so I tend to do my own thing on the fringes rather than jump into the middle of it….
But its interesting to see this happen so quickly.
And this time round I have my own blog, so it opens things up a bit…..
I met some of those firedoglakers at the lamont campaign and besides that there are lots of them and that they are able to get more info as a group travelling round with the candidates, they are pretty much the same as little old me…except that I write more opinion.
I need to get a reporter who is out and around to write on my site…
If anyone ever wants to guest write please let me know!!
Edwards is so cute!! But he does that strange tongue thing when he is speaking…i wonder if they have worked on it for this time round?
He is tiny though…but it doesnt matter…..as long as he uses an apple box when he is appearing with anyone really tall.
When the repubs start pounding the danger drums I think that edwards and obama look like bambi and his mom in the headlights…
You think he looks like John Ritter? I keep getting asked if Im Amy Yasbek, his widow….but I met John Ritter many years ago and I dont think that Edwards looks like him…I think he is much more handsome, really…..except for the tongue thing….and the shortness…but then Im really tall, so I like a tall guy.
I think it’s Edwards grin that looks like Ritter, I guess. Plus similar hair and coloring.
merger between XM and Sirius??
#30, Maron-Seder ’08?
Anyone know what will be in Franken’s slot tomorrow?
Great Leonard Cohen interview on Fresh Air today.
Well Ritter was fantastic and cute, but Id be worried to have him running the military….and Edwards has the danger of falling into that cute place too…as long as he keeps telling it like it is and doesnt let the handlers get him and dumb down his message, I think he has a real chance….Just keep speaking to the middle and lower class people…his message has remained the same and its as importantnow as it was last time round….Even if he doesnt get there, he is saying some important stuff…and thats how I felt about Dean too!
But Obama has scandel already, one is regarding being on the “board” of Walmart — not cool, but by the way the rethugs are playing with his middle name I almost want to vote Obama just for that reason. But final vote is DEM 😎 :pup:
avi
Melina, Have you noticed that Edwards seems to be trying to show gravitas and not smile so much? I don’t watch too much TV but that what I have observed.
I think cnick was absent yesterday. He probably was enjoying his New Year’s hard apple cider.
I dont know if they get along well enough to serve together for 4 to 8 years…and I dont know if Marc could make it more than a day or two before he blows his stack about something…that anger problem gets in the way of public office.
But then, those guys have a really important job to do just keeping the voice of liberal radio alive….
Druid, you are worried about the Hussein thing? Wait till they start attacking Al-Gore.
Im sure Nick had plans…hes a social animal and can still stand the clubs and stuff…I fell asleep at 11 after trying to watch a horrible movie : Strangers With Candy
Gore has already been vetted to death and so has edwards…thats part of the good thing about them….the real fun is gonna be the rethugs running all these crazy ass divorcees…..I want to see Rudy run so badly….
I guess I hadnt republished my blog so the edwards button didnt show up…I just spent all this time trying to figure out why it wasnt there when it was in the template! Duh!!
Oh, I agree about Gore, just trying to make a joke about all of them mooslems being named Al.
Wouldn’t you rather see Brownback? They do have a cast of clowns. “Surge” McClain could go down in flames early (not making a POW joke).
 Sorry folks, but how can anyone call Ritter cute :barf:
He was a sweet, slapstick buffoon, but “good looking” eck…we went to same school so I learn much about this man, but a “smart” good-looking guy … :yuck: :alc: :bong:
but we all have one thing in-common: The Maron :yippee: 😉 :rofl2:
AIV
Hey, Spitzer and Cuomo’s inaugration is on TV…the local news channel!
make all the POW jokes you wan…I think that McCain has gone beyond where he can use his experience to “help” anyone anymore….
so nice…Andy Cuomo has his Dad up there holding the book for him with his kid and…is that his Mom? I really like the Cuomos….
Ritter, son of Tex Ritter. Very cool. One of Billy Bob Thornton’s oldest and best friends. Also cool.
Speaking of the dead, 10th anniversary of the passing of Townes Van Zandt.
Ain’t I just a ray of sunshine this morning.
Melina, rats, I would like to see 50. Everytime I clean animal/bird cages I think of you  :omg: :nana: 😉
AIV
Spitzer has a black Lt Gov…..These guys are gonna have to hit the ground running.
This is gonna be a great month.
Not only do we get 24 and …Dirt….and maybe Rescue me…back on TV…but we also get our Majority and all….and hopefully INVESTIGATIONS…HEARINGS…..who knows what can happen??
And maybe we’ll get Marc back on the air as AAR shakes out!!
When was Al due back?
wvmc3d Ain’t I just a ray of sunshine this morning.
:rofl2: :rofl2: … … and “he” and “they” may be 😎 but I still would not like to “cuddle” with them.

Is it 10 years since Townes died Vern? That doesnt seem possible…but I guess I knew him before I had Will and Will is gonna be 13 in 3 weeks!!…so it could be…heaven knows, he was on deaths door back then…if he made it another few years it was a miracle. He was such a wreck!
But the fun thing was that we went to this fancy restaurant on 9th St between 5th Ave and…Marylou’s?…and it was an afterhours scene (I was with the musicians from Marlboro who had done an acoustic show at the Bottom Line)
The scenesters who showed up at 2 AM or whatever were hair metal rock guys coming from Bleeker St gigs…young guys who seemed to be out of the 70’s or somehting…and a couple of them actually recognized Townes (we were sitting at the bar eating shrimp cocktails) and they all started to come over and tell him how he was their biggest influence…it was incredible how these kids from jersey or wherever knew him.
Townes was a mess…and his wife was about to have a baby…just a mess.
John Ritter was a fantastic and kind person…just full of warmth and love…like Marc without the anger management problem…and funny as all hell. he wasnt dark at all…
…and John Ritter had that Jackson Browne hair…so shiny…
Well, I have to go and do around. I should have finished a project last night — so TODAY it must be 😮 😉 Cheers.

All of you folk are Great! :yippee:
I just opened the christmas calendars…far side page a day and also wacky websites page a day….
UGH! I hated that movie Strangers With Candy too! :yuck: My face hurt, not from laughing so hard but from having to watch that woman make that constantly pathetic face for an hour and a half. It was painful, I’m surprised I made it through.
I kept thinking that it was tracy ullman or someone who wanted to be her…there was not one part where I laughed at all…not even a little.
Will watched it before me and said it was Ok and sorta funny….I dunno…he ususally has great taste in humor.
I watched a steve buscemi movie the other night that was pretty disappointing too. Lonesome Jim. I wonder if you were supposed to hate the main character?
For some reason, I don’t want to go outside today :paranoid: It’s a nice enough day, like always so it’s not that. I wonder what THAT’S about?
Are we talking about Amy Sedaris? She is pretty great. I have not seen the movie. I tried to watch the TV show and felt about the same way you do about that role.
I don’t know who she is. i don’t know anything. 😥
kp, she was on TMMS http://www.airamerica.com/maron/node/186#comment

Hey, it’s only 9 here and I’m broiling. I’m not complaining. I’m a little groggy. I shouldn’t have stayed up blogging with you guys.
Here’s your show:
Amy Sedaris, star, and Paul Dinello, star, co-writer, Strangers with Candy, the movie
John Amato, crooksandliars.com, on, ya know, John stuff
Brad Friedman, bradblog.com, on election malfeasance in San Diego
Rep. John Tierney, 6th District Mass, on mismanagement of Katrina funds
You were on the blog that night. It was 102 degrees. I am pretty certain she was on MS as well. She’s good. I imagine the SWC TV and movie are an acquired taste.
Okay, well she may have been funny on the show but the movie stunk.
The movie was really horrible…and I remember her being on with Marc…I cant figure why anyone liked it…But I feel the same way about Napoleon Dynamyte. It may have to do with your high school or something.
The part I liked the best was the evil stepmother because I could really identify…but the lead character was so heavythanded and over the top that it was just crazy!
I just slogged out through the mud where the new path has partially washed away its so we here…and the basement is flooded again of course…and its sorta nice and warm and foggy…I was hauling trash down and I realized that this must be what its like to live in the south…its like a nice cool day in the south!
also am watching the marathon of dirty jobs…really nauseating….
has anyone tried the new IE 7? Ive been messing with it and Im happy that it doesnt make my blog sidebar drop to the bottom, but it seems ot be awfully slow compared to firefox. I turned off the phishing philter and Its still slow!!
So, I ended up going outside eventually. But not past the gate. :paranoid:
Is 2007 safe yet? :tinfoil::tongue:
Great Leonard Cohen interview on Fresh Air today.
Is it worth getting the podcast? It’s been a while since I have listened to anything on NPR. Is there some political stuff in there?
Sue P.’s article Re #10 is being discussed on NPR right now. 😆
In the sky! A bird? A plane? A … UFO?
It sounds like a tired joke–but a group of airline employees insist they are in earnest, and they are upset that neither their bosses nor the government will take them seriously.
A flying saucerlike object hovered low over O’Hare International Airport for several minutes before bolting through thick clouds with such intense energy that it left an eerie hole in overcast skies, said some United Airlines employees who observed the phenomenon.
Was it an alien spaceship? A weather balloon lost in the airspace over the world’s second-busiest airport? A top-secret military craft? Or simply a reflection from lights that played a trick on the eyes?

Japanese TV audience shocked by mass ‘wardrobe malfunction’
The Japanese TV viewing public got more than it expected when dancers performing in a New Year’s Eve broadcast went topless en masse.
The singer DJ Ozma performed a peppy, hip hop-like song as part of a New Year’s Eve broadcast on NHK, one of Japan’s major television networks. The group’s singers were on stage with a large group of showgirl-style dancers.
The performance appeared quite standard initially. But at about the song’s two minute mark, most of the dancers, both male and female, began to rapidly disrobe until they were topless. Many viewers complained at what they saw as a flagrantly improper display of nudity, prompting NHK TV to apologize, according to a Reuters report on the incident.
But a blogger at the website Japancast posted the apology in Japanese, which revealed that the dancers were not in fact “topless.” Instead, the dancers were all wearing flesh-colored body suits with exposed breasts painted on them.
RAW STORY has located the video, which can be watched below.

HAPPY NEW YEAR BLOGARIELS!

so much to go back and read…
in etlanna with mr fk. house still standing, dogs itching, floors filthy, donkey fat, well, she’s big boned, and all is ok. warm as hell here, though.
I WISH ALL YOU SEDITIONISTS A PEACEFUL HEALTHY & PROSPEROUS 2007!
after seeing those wacky Japanese, I feel as though Newnancrest is really quite boring. is that guy at the end, their version of Dick Clark? no match.
looking at PJ’s death march, a lot of folks died last year. guess they do every year. :billcat:
or do they? :omg:
(watched the Illusionist on the plane home)
OMG! I saw Dick Clark last night and we were aghast! What the hell is he on?? OR How old is he REALLY!
You know, I see a real problem with looking younger than your age because people expect more of you. If you LOOK like an old fart, no one will bug you!
i thought he was dead, too, kp, but pj doesn’t have him listed so that must have been the original Dick Clark on the teevee last night. He’s put some plastic surgeon’s kids through college…..a few times.

Happy New Year Kat….when is Mr heading back over?….
It must be very strange over there now….
I put Krugman’s Jan 1 article up….and my silly end of year….
Dick Clark had a huge stroke and was almost wheeled out last year…I guess hes better this year. I didnt see him because I just went to sleep…couldnt face it…but maybe a big stroke is sorta like natural botox….right?
He has always been a freak of nature for one who tans …but I do thik that hes had quite a bit done. Isnt he like, 80-ish?
I saw ryan seacrest and just had to turn it off….
but maybe a big stroke is sorta like natural botox….
:rofl2:
Happy New Year Melina and to Will!
(the teenager is still with his dad, much to his chagrin.)
I missed Krugman and your year end wrap up so will mosey on over to your place for a while. Is Rich on vacation?
=> think he’ll be home for about 10 days or so. he’s watching the OU game pre-game stuff. he missed most of their games this year, so all has come to a stand still on the Farm in honor of the Sooners.
Well, thank goddess that he gets 10 days to let the holiday and hanging settle a bit over there!…and I hope you guys are enjoying your quiet time sans teenager….Mine is suddenly taller and skinnier…mist be 5’9″ by now because thats what I am…and very happy with the Wii….and we both still have little appetite and a constant headache!
I have not seen Rich and I believe that he is not around this week…I looked for him and it seems ot be the last one….things have been so confused with this virus still hanging on (and my Mom in a relapse, and a friend I met in Cancun now emailing me with symptoms…and she is still in Cancun till Friday!!)
that I am all a mess Times-wise…..
At least we’ve had time to rest…though I have to get stuff done pretty soon….
Jeeze, after reading Jill’s concise and true list…along with her great layout (how do I get sidebars like that?) …I feel like a schlub for just crapping together whatever popped into my mind….
oh well….I dont take the year end stuff too seriously…Ive lost the ability to shed a tear or feel a tug towards old lang syne….its sorta sad…but last year felt like a war to me…besides the real war…
But I really enjoyed Jill’s list and it reminded me of some of the more important things that happened ….and Ive been looking at alot of music end of year stuff on my americana list…
re #74, web, I could listen to Leonard Cohen read the phone book. The man has such a grace and elegance.
Melina, first you have to sweat bullets for weeks on end trying to get your style sheets to work right before you get the hang of the blogger templates. But as much of a pain in the ass as they are, they’re better than trying to navigate through Drupal.
I debated about including Marc on the list, but he really just missed the cut. And I’m still mad at him about the fat marshal bit. :spank:
I am hoping and expecting him to surface sometime in 2007 with a new show, which will give him a shot at my list at the end of the year.
Answering my own question…
Tuesday, January 2nd
by Eric Hananoki on January 1, 2007 – 9:57pm.
Norm Ornstein Sloan Lawrence O’Donnell
After a two week hiatus, The Al Franken Show returns live from Minneapolis, Minnesota. Al will talk about his trip overseas with the USO, and speak to guests:
(1:30) Norm Ornstein, an AEI resident scholar, and co-author of The Broken Branch: How Congress Is Failing America and How to Get It Back on Track.
(2:00) Melanie Sloan, our ethics regular from Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington.
(2:20) Lawrence O’Donnell, the former executive producer of “The West Wing,” the former Chief of Staff of the Senate Finance Committee, and Al Franken Show Hollywood correspondent.
I think that Marc isnt gonna do the fat jokes anymore…just a feeling….but I think that some of us mentioned it to him. I did anyway. I noticed that he mentioned the NYTimes article about the study that ties obesity to a germ….and I had mentioned that to him…so hopefully he is done with that.
It is horrendous to go to a major attraction somewhere like mall of america and to see just how fat americans are…but I think its probably more of a tragedy than a comic bit.
wow, so Franken is coming back….very interesting…what could this mean? Pay cut? Deal? …..I wish they would tell us something. He is being replace din some markets obviously…
Anyway, I just got a pocet tunes upgrade for my treo that will allow me to stream internet radio on my phone as part of my unlimited data package. I should be able to plug that into the car in my ipod aux plug….? Maybe…..
OK…well, Larry King has Jack Hanna doing happy zoo year!….hes got a lynx!….Dru are you seeing this?…hes got reindeer.
