It’s Friday, and I get to end the week in my favored work location. Unfortunately, my ‘supervisor’ is off today, and so I’m in line to handle any problems that arise. Somehow, I’ve gotten stuck with this sort of thing, despite only working on this side of things part time. My problem is that I tend to smile and nod and say OK a lot, even though I have no clue what I’m doing. Then I have to go and figure out how to do it. And then I get a reputation for being somebody who knows what he’s doing, so people keep asking me shit, so then I have to figure out how to do even more shit.
I do this to myself all the time. I remember when I stopped being a projectionist, and started being a ‘maintenance helper,’ way back when. The job description was basically, ‘hold the ladder and fetch tools’ (which is about all I was qualified to do, truth be told, beyond maybe replacing my brake pads, unless you had a 35 or 70 mm projector torn down and rebuilt or maybe a Xenon bulb replaced, or perhaps adjust the trim on a carbon arc lamphouse). So they asked me, “you know how to fix an ice machine?” And like an idiot, I said “oh, sure.” So I became the ice machine guy. Then I got an apprenticeship, and eventually became a Refrigeration Mechanic (still got my Journeyman card, and my EPA certification). All the while never really knowing what I was doing.
When I think about it, I realize I don’t actually know how to do much of anything. I know just enough about a lot of things to bullshit my way through. I guess I’m just too stupid or vain or stubborn or something to say “I don’t know.”
I ought to add that to my resume.
Oh, PJ
You are just so smart. You know how to make things go.

Sadly, I look more like a Pakled than Geordi.
Eight hours until the weekend! Maybe tonight I’ll go hang out at Applebee’s salad bar.

Next time PBS asks me for money (which, actually, is this week), I’m going to tell them to fire David Brooks for gross idiocy, keep the first 200,000 of what they pay him, and send me the rest. I’m sure he can live comfortably on what he makes being stupid for the NY Times.
:fu:
This may be borderline Maron incorrectness, but David Brooks looks retarded. I bet when he was born, the doctors had to do extra tests to make sure he wasn’t mongoloid.
Cue Devo.
They definitely had to go with the high forceps when they yanked Brooks out.
Did you guys get this?
Hey,
Here’s a thing i did a while ago. Enjoy.

Love to you all.

Unemployment went from 5.0% to 5.5% and oil is up more than $6. to just under $135. a barrel.
Now it’s time for all of us patriots to keep on shopping.
A British judge has ordered a hearing into whether the British government must turn over evidence bearing on accusations by a prisoner at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, that he was tortured during interrogation in Morocco.
The judge, acting on a request by lawyers for the prisoner, Binyam Mohamed, rejected an argument of the British government that releasing any documents risked “that more robust evidence of mistreatment of C.I.A. prisoners could emerge in the future.â€
The British government, in a court filing last month, accepted that Mr. Mohamed had presented an “arguable case†that he had been tortured after his “extraordinary rendition†to Morocco and Afghanistan. Mr. Mohamed has said that, among other things, his interrogators in Morocco made cuts on his chest and genitals with a razor.
To support Mr. Mohamed’s claim, his lawyer Clive Stafford Smith is seeking photographs that he said an American soldier took of Mr. Mohamed’s injuries, during a flight from Morocco to Cuba.
“I can tell you with 100 percent certainty that those photographs exist,†Mr. Stafford Smith said in an interview on Thursday. Under the strict secrecy rules imposed by the Pentagon on lawyers representing Guantánamo detainees, Mr. Stafford Smith said he could not go into any more detail.
Last week, Mr. Stafford Smith wrote a letter to Representative Bill Delahunt, Democrat of Massachusetts, who has been holding hearings into the prison at Guantánamo, urging him to make an official request to the Pentagon for the photographs.
Mr. Delahunt’s office said in an e-mail message on Thursday that the congressman would be making an official request for the photographs.

Superdelegate says Clinton campaign used ‘divisive tactics’
A Democratic superdelegate from New Jersey said this week he is worried that unifying the party behind Barack Obama may be difficult because the Clinton camp “has engaged in some very divisive tactics and rhetoric it should not have.”
U.S. Rep. Rob Andrews, who supported Hillary Clinton throughout the primary season, disclosed he received a phone call shortly before the April 22 Pennsylvania primary from a top member of Clinton’s organization and that the caller explicitly discussed a strategy of winning over Jewish voters by exploiting tensions between Jews and African-Americans.
Let’s see, with Madison playing Hartmann in Randi’s slot, there are only 2 stations, NY and Columbus, that will be running Kuby’s show. Was the decision made just for the NY market? It’s my belief (but I have no proof) that if AAR had offered Seder and/or Maron during the same time period, Madison might have decided to stay with the AAR afternnon show.
Would any of the affiliates that ran off with Randi to NovaM come back for a Seder or Maron show? Randi’s audience probably has a lot of Seder and Maron fans in it. If the audience got a voice in a head to head Seder vs. Rhodes, or Maron vs. Rhodes decision, which way would it go?
On one hand, I’m glad the original AAR hosts aren’t pitted against each other but on the other, I wonder if Mr. Greene blew a chance to pull some of his affiliates back from NovaM. Those familiar with Mr. Kuby’s old show in NY may be happy to have him back on the air, but how can AAR pick up any new outlets or regain old ones with the Kuby show?
Dow closed down almost 400 pts and oil is $138.+ a barrel. They are talking about $150 a barrel by July 4.
But, not to worry. The market god will take care of everything, just keep shopping.
Speaking of the stock market, has anybody heard from Fred? I hope he’s doing OK.
Not just a record price for oil, but a record increase, up $10.75 in one day. Be interesting to see how much gas goes up tomorrow.
up 50 percent in the last two years.
What was oil, $20 a bbl before Bush?
I’m not very old, and I remember when it was .999 $ a gallon.
within the first years of his term I remember somethign like 35 bbl
Webhubbletelescope would know
http://www.wtrg.com/oil_graphs/oilprice1947.gif
When I was a kid, it was about 30 cents a gallon. They’d have price wars (believe it or not) that would get it down into the 20’s. Plus, there was no such thing as ‘self serve.’ They’d not only pump the gas, but they’d wash your windshield and check the oil. With a fill-up, you’d get a glass or a steak knife or something (back then, red meat, whole milk, and cigarettes were good for you).
Ah, those were the days….
I remember 23¢ and the free maps
That was back when cars had cranks, too, right? 😉
BTW, for you single guys out there, I highly recommend that you borrow somebody’s puppy. That Fritz is a real babe magnet. If only I’d had im when I was single….
#23 — Kevin M — Hey, are ya listening!!! Adopt a puppy from Mississippi & you will have one of the best chick magnets EVER :hubba: :pup:
Hope your finger feels better. I empathize. My left forefinger got smashed in the back door last year, lost the nail after it blackened & painfully degenerated. Wore one of those finger brace things forever because the bone was fractured. The fingernail joint of that finger is still numb.
A puppy would definitely help. :pup:
PJ, can you email Fred? It doesn’t seem like a good sign that he disappeared so abruptly
I’ve thought about it, Sue. I hate to violate people’s privacy, though. I don’t like to abuse the registration information. I’ll have to think about it. It’s not something I do lightly.
pj- maybe you could contact him to see if he’s okay. If he doesn’t want to communicate anything back, just don’t tell us. But you could convey our concern. He’s been a pretty big part of this blog- not that I’m saying anything that everyone doesn’t know.
Bob Dylan Speaks Out For Barack Obama
Bob Dylan has come out in favor of Barack Obama. In an interview with the London Times, Dylan described the Democratic presidential nominee in Kennedyesque terms when asked by an interviewer for his take on the US election. “Right now America is in a state of upheaval,†Dylan said. “Poverty is demoralising. You can’t expect people to have the virtue of purity when they are poor. But we’ve got this guy out there now who is redefining the nature of politics from the ground up…Barack Obama. He’s redefining what a politician is, so we’ll have to see how things play out. Am I hopeful? Yes, I’m hopeful that things might change. Some things are going to have to.â€
Well, PJ, if you just sent one email as a friend I don’t think it could be considered spam. And if something did happen to him and he has family or friends that are taking care of him or something, they might be able to let you know what happened, if it did.
I don’t pay as much attention to the economics of oil as to how quickly it is depleting. But it has gone up a lot in price as the production levels have pretty much plateaued.
The big worry I have with Obama is the letdown that some of his more idealistic supporters are going to have when he turns out to be what they call a ‘centrist’ these days (used to be called a ‘Republican’).
Yes, Obama has a lot to live up to and he probably knows it. If he can rally the people, which is probably the most important thing for him to focus on, then he will be successful because he has the support and willingness of the people.
Oh, how funny, I’m listening to tech web sound and they’re playing the commercial for “Wild in the Streets” with Richard Pryor and Ed Begley. The youngest president ever and the voting age is changed to 14!
Tech Web Sound !!!
I get mesmerized everytime I hear Take A Look Around by The James Gang.which they played right after that commercial.
Please, PJ, Contact Fred. If he is down then some of the humour here might make it’s way to him, to bring a bit of Cheer and ELAN … :tommygun:
Whom Better To Contact WHOMEVER from this side of “The VOID” than the Creator of This World…?
We All Respect You PJ Because You Are “Mostly 😉 ” LBH :rofl2: FAIR…
