I’m not much of an NBA fan, personally, but I guess I could get behind the Clippers, since they started out as the Buffalo Braves (coached by Dolph Schayes, who won an NBA Championship with the Syracuse Nationals, who are now the Philadephia 76’ers).

As long as the Clippers are playing, the podcasts are going to get screwed up. Bob needs to span the stream capture for a longer time to account for the delayed start of Maron’s show. I’m a neophyte on this torrent thing. I know how to click on the links and download them, but not how they work. What’s the difference between seeding and hosting, and how do I get the file if it’s been seeded but no web page is publishing a link?

I seem to have gotten all of yesterday’s show. If anyone has an FTP site they’re willing to share, I’ll be happy to upload. I thought I had FTP storage of my own, but I’m either wrong or stupid because I can’t access it–and I haven’t heard back from customer support.

To all of you the :bow: Replay AV experts, is there a way to pause the recording while the stream continues to play. That way one could skip Stephanie’s Honda which is as annoying as the muzak AAR plays nowadays.
The show was as good as MS on the 2nd day itself :fist: If AAR sees sense (I doubt it will ever happen :mad::mad:), it will start promoting it at a more decent listening hour on its other stations.

I don’t think there’s a way to listen to/pause the capture. You could try telling it to break it up into segments by time (say, 15 minutes), but I think it does that after it gets the whole stream.
You coauld also get the AAR stream going at the same time, and if the breaks are psync’d up, you’ll get the godawful AAR jazzac. A few minutes of that should make you ache for the joys of the Stephanie Miller Honda ads. 🙂

I use audacity. You can’t scrub (go backie-forthie using the mousie), which kinda sucks. However, if you look at the waveform, you’ll see clearly that the commerical breaks have lower peaks than the show itself does, so it looks like thinner little bands in between the longer, thicker (ooh, brokeback moment there) ones. It aint exact, but it gives you a quck and dirty way to find the breaks. Still somewhat tedious to edit, though. I’m trying to find a freeware one that will scrub back and forth.
Jason better not screw with Jesus.
Just playing with an editor called WavePad, and it seems to work pretty OK. It’ll take a while to get a technique down. I went in quickly using the wave peaks to identify the ads and take them out. It doesn’t catch the station promo stuff, but it gets the bulk of the ads, anyway. You can then go in a try to clean out the rest of the stuff (or just say, good enough).

Thanks LJin, PJ for Audacity :-o. It looks like it would be very handy if you are listening and recording the stream at the same time. I did look into ways how one can completely avoid the horrific muzak from AAR or Dr Moosa’s eye transplants at KTLK by trying to time the breaks but it does look like sometimes the timings of the breaks are way out of sync. Besides when the Clippers kick in it will be completely screwed up.
I will keep looking for something which could be used to identify the breaks and edit them out. I will try though trying to listen and record the stream at the same time and see how it comes out in Audacity. I :love: this blog.

One thing to keep in mind is that AAR (haven’t had a chance to look to see if the Marc breaks are the same, yet) has hard breaks at the top and bottom of the hour, and 2 soft breaks (at the host’s – or at least the producer’s – disgression) somewhere in between. Breaks are 4 minutes, and of course there’s the two minutes of news at the top of the hour, which is why they start at six past the hour. Once you get into aroutine finding the hard breaks is easy, and then you just need to look for the soft ones. Finding them on Mar’c show is pretty easy – the wave forms are clearly different. WavePad seems pretty easy to use, though you need to keep zooming in and out. You can use the arow keys to hear advance/go back .25 or so seconds at a time, and hear it. You can also use the mouse to select a sectionand listen/cut etc. Still not automagic settings, but once you get used to working with it, I reckon you could get it edited in a hurry.
It helps if you have a shitload of work to do and are desperately procrastinating.

PJ, even then the time based breaks sometimes do not work as it is upto the radio host to end the segment and go into the break. Rachel did do a long segment today while kicking that wingnut’s ass and the break got delayed. So there is no sure way to identify the breaks by time. I guess the best way as you suggest is by looking at the wave patterns. Will take a look at Wavepad when I get some time. Thanks again for the help 😎

I was really tired sitting at my computer listening to the show last night (tired but so happy hearing marc, the show was great, read our blog comments when you get a chance). i woke up this morning thinking i was going to sign up for aar podcasting but now, no way, i mean we all knew that the clippers game was going to be a problem yesterday, why didn’t bob figure it out, aar treats marc like poopie. i’ll figure out some way to download the show and get my sleep too. no $$$ to stupid aar, that’s for sure.

Yeah, there are lots of smileys out there to use (some I grabbed from other places – just do a google search – and some I made myself), but every one I add takes up more space and makes the page load a little bit slower, so I try pick a good assortment, and not add more until I get nagged enough. Plus, some things are just hard to represent in a fairly small amount of space.

I’m not sure what Bob’s current affiliation with AAR is. He started AAP as a fan site, and eventually AAR started helpign out with bandwidth costs. Mostly, he and a fewothers were volunteering to grab the show, edit them and save them to the web. I’d assume that AAR is paying something now, but, well, let’s just say I bet it aint a fortune.
You’d think that KTLK would have tape (well, maybe not tape theses days) running whenever they’re broadcasting. I suppose there could have been a “board” error, but it would somewhat, shall we say, coincidental if the borad error happened to coincide with the amount of time the show was delayed by the game.
You’d also think AAR would be getting a feed from KTLK, even if they choose not to air it. Surely, they’d want to have somethgin to bring along when they try to sell the show in syndication, wouldn’t they?
Of course, I don’t squat about radio, so some of you folks with radio in the blood would surely know more. I just think everything AAR has done (with regard to the on-air, radio part) has been kind of half-assed.
I set my time as 10:00 until 1:30 (MMT – Marc Maron Time, or 1:00 – 3:30 Eastern). That would have worked out well, except the KTLK stream died and didn’t come back at about 12:24 MMT. So, I missed 20 minutes or so. I guess that’s a price I’m willing to pay for not having premium. Oh, but they got even less – at least until CK bailed them out.
I least I got to hear Marc mention us – and Gypsy, which was cool.

wow i was so confused this morning, went into replay and they listed 5 files. for some reason, they recorded some things in three minute segments. i had one long segment of an hour and a half. It took me a long time this afternoon to sort thru this all, but it does seem like replay did make an attempt to record what it could. I had it set to record until 1 a.m. I will have to listen to see what i have, thank god there is no game tonight. if sammy was on last night, i sure hope i got him….

Replay will keep trying to reconnect, automatically if the stream dies before the end ot the allotted record time (got up one day to find 30 or so 1 meg files – all nicely numbered – when my Car Talk steam pointed to a stream that wasn’t working). My stream never came back, I guess. Happens, when you get older.

Numerous editors, libel lawyers and leading scholars in the field from Israel, the United Kingdom and the United States were called upon to render judgment. It’s pretty scary, especially in light of the NSA stuff, and the general complacency of the public when it comes to their own civil rights and right to privacy. They can see, finally, that Bush is a stublin’, bumblin’ fool (now that they can see it on the teevee), but they are eithe so unaware, or so drugged with the fear of the boogieman terrorists that they just don’t seem to get it.

The Politics of the Srebrenica Massacre*

“Srebrenica” has become the symbol of evil, and specifically Serb evil. It is commonly described as “a horror without parallel in the history of Europe since the Second World War” in which there was a cold-blooded execution “of at least 8,000 Muslim men and boys.” [1] The events in question took place in or near the Bosnian town of Srebrenica between July 10 and 19, 1995, as the Bosnian Serb army (BSA) occupied that town and fought with and killed many Bosnian Muslims, unknown numbers dying in the fighting and by executions. There is no question but that there were executions, and that many Bosnian Muslim men died during the evacuation of Srebrenica and its aftermath. But even though only rarely discussed there is a major issue of how many were executed, as numerous bodies found in local grave sites were victims of fighting, and many Bosnian Muslim men who fled Srebrenica reached Bosnian Muslim territory safely. Some bodies were also those of the many Serbs killed in the forays by the Bosnian Muslims out of Srebrenica in the years before July 1995.
The Srebrenica massacre has played a special role in the politics of Western treatment of the restructuring of the former-Yugoslavia and in Western interventionism more broadly, and it is receiving renewed attention and memorialization at its tenth anniversary in July 2005. It is regularly cited as proof of Serb evil and genocidal intent and helped justify a focus on punishing the Serbs and Milosevic and NATO’s 1999 war on Serbia. It has also provided important moral support for the further Western wars of vengeance, power projection, and “liberation,” having shown that there is evil that the West can and must deal with forcibly. . .

So I managed to capture the KTLK stream of last nights show thanks to Replay Radio 7. I had the same problem with the Clippers game encroaching into Maron’s first hour. So I’m going to record 3 hours just to play it safe from now on. That should do it. I also did have one small section of “dead air” in last nights recording. I recorded @ MP3 fomat and burned a data CD. From there it was easy to import to Itunes in my Imac then to “Nano-land”. So I was driving down Highway 280W this morning listening to “The Marc Maron Show”, just like the good ole days. I’m hoping to hear all the old characters from Morning Sedition. I missed “Sammy the Stem Cell” last night cause my timing was off. But I’m covered now and not paying endless fees to AAR for the premium podcasts. Boy, are all you guys gonna be pissed should AAR decide to air Marc’s show live on their network! Forking over $$$ to AAR isn’t in my budget. Like I’m a poor liberal, not a Rich Republican. :tongue:

$379 is a grea price…at apple.com you can get an educational discount if youve been to school anytime recently. they dont even seem to check. I think it was around that price, maybe a little cheaper.
the video is smaller and lighter than the photo…so if youre going for a large storage situation the video is for you…its just lighter. Also, the video thing is fantastic, and will definitely come in handy one way or another.

I did learn how to transfer music from iPod to computer…its a HACK…heh heh…But the new Tivo has a USB output for the iPod (and other players) so you can add TV shows. Im not sure how it works…but maybe will afford it sometime this year…or not….
maybe there is a program for the computer to convert shows to the right file type.
Meantime iunes keeps giving free shows.
I was playing with a nifty piece of hacker software a while back, and it took away my “a.” I could use “A” or I could put the caps lock on and then hit shift and get an “a,” but damn, it was annoying.
Pretty cool little app, though.

Yeah, they say they can do mp4, so I can convert those (I can get anything off my ReplayTV’s to my computer, and do what I want to them from there). I’d just really miss being able to record lectures and speeches and stuff with my iRiver, plus I use the FM tuner a fair amount of the time, and the optical in/out is really nice for hooking up to the stereo. I guess I’ll probably wait to upgrade until I run out of space on mine (or maybe if they come out with one that has earbuds that interface with your visual cortex to give you instant 3D video – think of the porn they could sell).

I am looking for good, small bluetooh headphones, and the toggle atachments are a drag because most of em interfere with the case. How can you sell an item that scratches so badly that the first moment its out of the box its scratched, and then have add-ons that require it to have the plug on the top totally available across the whole top, not just the plug hole like headphones need….so IM looking for a toggle hat hangs a bit now…but its much more expensive that way….
the good ones have a mic in them so your bluetooth phone calls come through and pause your music or whaever. This is all new to me…really cool but hard to get used to! Im living in star trek without a phaser.The video thing would be very handy if one commutes on the train or something…but if I was seriously doing that I would use the PSP…that is a beauiful machine and it surfs the internet in hot spots.

A 12-year-old boy visiting the Detroit Institute of Arts with his school group on Friday stuck a wad of chewing gum on the painting, which is worth an estimated $1.5 million, the Detroit Free Press said.
The barely chewed Wrigley’s Extra Polar Ice gum left a residue stain about the size of a quarter in the lower left-hand corner of the painting, the newspaper said.
The boy was suspended from Holly Academy, a Detroit-area charter school he attends, the newspaper reported.
Neither museum nor school officials could be immediately reached for comment.
The 1963 painting, which remains on display, is considered one of the most important modern works in the Detroit museum’s collection, the newspaper said.
Museum curators expect to be able to remove the gum residue with a solvent once they have researched the chemicals contained in the gum, assistant contemporary art curator Becky Hart said.
“In the scheme of things, this is upsetting, and it will make us review our policies. But we’re confident that the painting will be OK,” Hart told the Free Press.

Just heard the Dick of the Day. He didn’t say the name – in fact, he said “an un-named 12 year old.” He also said that we had to cut the kid some slack ‘cuz of his age. He was named Dick of the Day because the act “came from a disdain and lack of respect for that type of art, which could lead to Republican policy.” And of course, the “award” was named after our Vice President.

Republicans Banned from Adopting Children

An Ohio Democrat has introduced new legislation that would ban Republicans from adopting children, a move aimed at embarrassing the GOP over moves to block gay adoptions.
State Sen. Robert Hagan (D-Youngstown) admits his bill is purely “tongue-in-cheek” but says that the message is anything but a joke.
In an email sent to fellow legislators, and obtained by Knight Ridder Newspapers, Hagan says he’s looking for co-sponsors to “introduce legislation in the near future that would ban households with one or more Republican voters from adopting children or acting as foster parents.”
Earlier this month a bill to ban gays, bisexuals, and transgenderds from adopting was proposed by 10 far-right Republicans. It was introduced in the House this month by state Rep. Ron Hood (R-Ashville)
“We need to see what we are doing,” said Hagan, who called Hood’s proposed bill blatantly discriminatory and “homophobic.”
When Hood introduced his gay adoption ban he said that, “Studies have shown that the optimal setting to raise children in is a traditional setting with a mom and a dad.”

In Hagan’s email to fellow lawmaker’s he skewers Hood’s assertions, offering his own “credible research” shows that adopted children raised in Republican households are more at risk for developing “emotional problems, social stigmas, inflated egos, and alarming lack of tolerance for others they deem different than themselves and an air of overconfidence to mask their insecurities.”
Hagan knows his mock bill has no chance of getting to the floor for a vote let alone passing. And, Hood’s bill appears to be headed for a similar fate.
Great, now if we could just keep them from reproducing, we’d be all set.
